GP Generate, Social Update: Facebook Boycott

What is it?

This is an accountability campaign calling for brands to boycott Facebook (and Instagram), demanding change around racism, misinformation, and harmful content on the platforms.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), NAACP, Color of Change, Free Press, and watchdog company Sleeping Giants launched the campaign:

We are asking all businesses to stand in solidarity with our most deeply held American values of freedom, equality and justice and not advertise on Facebook’s services in July.

What’s Next

Boycott

Align your brand values with the cause and announce participation in the boycott. Pull all spend from Facebook and Instagram for the month of July. Reallocate social spend to alternative channels and treat this as an opportunity to test new platforms (e.g. TikTok).

 

Wait & See

The boycott might not gain enough traction and if it does, Facebook may meet boycott demands before the July 1st start. However, if the boycott proceeds, there may be a watchdog situation where brands are called out for advertisements during July. In this instance, we recommend reallocating to and testing alternative social media channels.
